The GPT-5.6 family — three models named Sol, Terra, and Luna — is now generally available across ChatGPT, the API, Codex, and GitHub Copilot, and it has retired GPT-5.5 as the platform default. The rollout marks the most aggressive model tiering strategy OpenAI has attempted, and it lands in the middle of a full-on price war with rivals at every altitude.

Three Models, One Strategy

OpenAI’s decision to ship three simultaneous tiers reflects a hard-won lesson: different customers need radically different cost-performance tradeoffs, and a single flagship creates an opening for cheaper rivals to undercut it on the mundane 80 percent of workloads.

Sol is the flagship. It introduces a new Ultra subagent mode — a coordinated multi-step reasoning system that can spawn child tasks, retrieve external context, and synthesize results before returning an answer — as well as a Max reasoning-effort setting that burns more compute for the hardest inference tasks. Sol is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens, putting it squarely in competition with Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 and Google’s Gemini Omni Ultra.

Terra targets the “everyday professional” tier that GPT-5.5 used to occupy. At $2.50 input / $15 output per million tokens, it delivers what OpenAI describes as “GPT-5.5-level quality at half the cost” — a benchmark the company has not independently verified but that early enterprise testers appear to confirm anecdotally.

Luna is the cost and speed play, priced at $1 input / $6 output per million tokens. Luna competes directly with Gemini Omni Flash, Grok 4.5, and the commodity tier of open-weight models being hosted by providers like Together AI and Groq. OpenAI’s bet is that Luna retains enough quality headroom over open-weight alternatives to justify remaining on a closed, metered API rather than self-hosting.

Speed as a Differentiator: The Cerebras Partnership

Perhaps the most technically striking aspect of the GPT-5.6 launch is where Sol will run. OpenAI confirmed that Sol is deploying on Cerebras wafer-scale hardware at throughput targets of up to 750 tokens per second — roughly an order of magnitude faster than GPU-based serving at comparable scale. For real-time agentic use cases, where a user is watching an AI work through a multi-step task in a browser, latency is UX; 750 TPS makes GPT-5.6 Sol subjectively feel like a fast typist rather than a slow thinker.

Cerebras has positioned its WSE-3 (Wafer Scale Engine 3) as the inference chip of record for the frontier model era, where training budgets are largely set and the remaining GPU scarcity is in serving capacity. The OpenAI partnership validates that positioning publicly for the first time at flagship model scale, and it arrives as Nvidia’s H200 supply chain tightens into 2027 allocation windows.

What Changed Since GPT-5.5

The GPT-5.6 family ships with a rewritten Responses API that supports programmatic tool calling — meaning downstream applications can now orchestrate multi-tool workflows without relying on free-form text parsing. Platform Presence

Access to GPT-5.6 starts at the ChatGPT Plus plan for Sol. Terra and Luna are available in ChatGPT from the Free tier with usage caps. On the API side, all three models are accessible from launch day with no waitlist. GitHub Copilot now defaults to Terra for code completion and Sol for Copilot Workspace, where longer context and deeper reasoning matter.

Competitive Context

What’s Next

OpenAI said GPT-5.7 is in training, with no timeline attached. The company also confirmed it is working on a multimodal “canvas” interface for Sol that would let users collaborate with the model on long-form structured documents — a feature that would put it more directly in competition with tools like Notion AI and Google Workspace’s Gemini integration.

For now, the GPT-5.6 family represents OpenAI’s clearest articulation yet that the AI platform race has bifurcated into two simultaneous games: a premium intelligence contest at the frontier, and a cost-per-token attrition war in the commodity tier. Sol is OpenAI’s move in the first game. Luna is its move in the second. The question for every competitor is whether they can credibly play both at once.
