The round, which closed in early May 2026, was led by Long-Z Investments, the venture arm of Chinese food delivery giant Meituan, with additional participation from Tsinghua Capital, China Mobile, and CPE Yuanfeng.

The financing caps a remarkable six-month run for Moonshot. The company entered 2026 valued at roughly $4.3 billion. By February, a $700 million raise had pushed that number past $10 billion. The technical specifications are comparably ambitious. The model ships with a 262,100-token context window, multi-turn tool calling, vision inputs, and structured outputs optimized for long-horizon agentic workloads.

On SWE-Bench Pro, the industry’s most rigorous coding benchmark, Kimi K2.6 scores 58.6% — ahead of GPT-5.4 at 57.7% and Claude Opus 4.6 at 53.4%, making it the highest-scoring open-weight model on that test at the time of release. On Humanity’s Last Exam with tools, it achieves 54.0%, again leading every frontier model Moonshot benchmarked against. The model was released under a Modified MIT License, making it freely available for self-hosting.

Moonshot’s annual recurring revenue crossed $200 million in April 2026, driven by a combination of paid consumer subscriptions (the Kimi chatbot is widely used in China) and API usage fees from developers building products on top of the model. This investor configuration reflects a maturation of the Chinese AI funding market. Early-stage Chinese AI investments were often driven by pure venture speculation — bets on which lab would produce the best model. The Moonshot round looks more like strategic alignment: corporates investing in AI infrastructure they expect to use, rather than simply to own.

Building on Huawei Chips

Perhaps the most strategically interesting dimension of Moonshot’s story is the hardware stack it has been forced to build on.

The result is more competitive fragmentation, which has driven faster open-weight model releases and more aggressive benchmark pushing than the U.S. market has seen at comparable scale.

For developers globally, the Moonshot raise represents good news: a well-funded, genuinely competitive open-weight model provider keeps pricing pressure on the closed API giants and accelerates the availability of capable models for self-hosting. Kimi K2.6’s Modified MIT License means that the model weights — trained on compute that cost hundreds of millions of dollars — are available for free to any developer who wants to run them.

That dynamic is not lost on OpenAI and Anthropic. Both companies have been navigating internal debates about open-weight releases for much of 2026, knowing that a Chinese lab producing credible open-weight alternatives at the frontier changes the calculus of whether closed APIs can maintain their pricing power.
