The problem, according to people familiar with the project, is that the engineering and policy challenges required to achieve that goal have proven more formidable than anticipated. The result: Apple’s first smart glasses, codenamed N50, will not appear at a 2026 event. A WWDC 2027 reveal is now the target, with a late 2027 commercial release expected to follow.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has tracked the project for years, reported this week that privacy concerns are among the primary drivers of the delay, alongside hardware complexity. The news lands at a moment when the entire smart glasses category is under a scrutiny that did not exist when Apple first green-lit the project.

The Problem With a Camera on Your Face

Smart glasses with cameras present a fundamentally different privacy surface than a smartphone. A phone held up to record is visible. Glasses can record continuously, passively, and at eye level — with no obvious behavioral signal that recording is happening. The potential for covert surveillance, whether intentional or incidental, is built into the form factor.

Meta has confronted this challenge with its Ray-Ban smart glasses through a combination of hardware and software safeguards: a white LED indicator light that illuminates when the camera is active, software that disables the camera if the indicator appears to have been tampered with, and terms of service that prohibit certain uses. The approach has offered enough reassurance for mainstream adoption, but it has not escaped controversy. A class-action lawsuit filed against Meta this year specifically targeted the glasses’ recording capabilities and the adequacy of consent mechanisms.

Apple engineers, according to sources within the Vision hardware group, view the Meta approach as a floor, not a ceiling. The company’s privacy standards — articulated across products from Face ID to App Tracking Transparency — create an implicit expectation that Apple’s wearable camera will do more to protect bystanders than a competitor’s offering.

Three Paths, No Easy Answers

The internal debate at Apple has reportedly crystallized around three approaches to the camera question, each with significant trade-offs.

The first option is to ship no camera at all. A prototype was reportedly built and tested. This approach fully eliminates the privacy problem and sidesteps regulatory risk in jurisdictions contemplating restrictions on facial recognition and public recording. The trade-off is severe: without a camera, the glasses cannot do much of what makes the category interesting — identifying objects, reading text, recognizing faces, or enabling the AI visual assistant features that are central to the product’s value proposition.

The second option is to include a full camera but software-restrict its capabilities to AI scene analysis only, prohibiting the taking of photos or recording of video at the user level. This preserves the device’s AI utility while limiting the recording liability. Critics of this approach note that it requires trusting Apple’s software enforcement at the hardware level — a promise that may not survive the scrutiny of regulators, journalists, or adversarial researchers who can test what the camera is actually doing.

The third option, which appears to be the most likely direction, is to include the camera with a robust hardware and software privacy system that goes further than anything currently on the market. This could include a physical shutter or indicator light, on-device biometric processing that never transmits visual data to the cloud, and granular user permissions for different recording scenarios. The downside is that designing, testing, and certifying such a system takes time — which explains the timeline slip.

The Regulatory Tailwind Nobody Wanted

Apple’s delay is, in a sense, a bet on the regulatory future. The company appears to be calculating that the smart glasses market of 2027 will be materially different from the market of today — that governments and consumers will have established clearer expectations for what a camera-equipped wearable must do to be acceptable.

There is evidence for this view. The European Union’s AI Act imposes requirements on systems that process biometric data in public spaces. Several U.S. states are developing or have enacted laws that restrict facial recognition and public surveillance technology. The Federal Trade Commission has signaled interest in platform accountability for data collected by wearable devices.

By delaying until 2027, Apple buys time to understand which jurisdictions will require what, and to build a compliance architecture that works across markets rather than having to retrofit regulation into a product already in consumers’ hands.

Competitive Landscape

The delay hands Meta a longer runway. The Ray-Ban smart glasses, now in their third generation, have become the best-selling smart glasses on the market and a genuine hit product for a company that badly needed one after the Vision Pro’s underwhelming commercial performance. Meta’s Orion AR prototype, which represents the longer-term direction, has been demonstrated publicly and is expected to see a consumer version before Apple’s N50 arrives.

Samsung’s Galaxy Glasses, announced at last week’s Unpacked event, add another competitor to the field. The Samsung device integrates deeply with Galaxy AI and Gemini, targeting Android users who want AI assistance in a wearable form factor.

Apple’s N50 will enter a market that will have had at least three years of smart glasses adoption, regulatory development, and cultural normalization — or controversy — by the time it ships. Whether that is an advantage or a disadvantage depends on how the category evolves.

What the N50 Is Expected to Offer

Sources describe the N50 as a relatively conventional smart glasses design — frames with embedded electronics, not the AR overlay approach of the cancelled Vision Air project. The product is expected to run a stripped-down version of Apple’s AI assistant, capable of answering questions using visual context, translating text, providing navigation guidance, and integrating with Apple Intelligence features like on-device reasoning and generative suggestions.

Audio capabilities — high-quality speakers embedded in the frames, noise-cancelling microphones, and deep AirPods integration — are expected to be a core feature regardless of which camera approach Apple selects. The audio case for smart glasses is privacy-neutral and well-established; the Ray-Ban glasses have found substantial adoption among users who primarily use them for music and calls rather than camera features.

Pricing is not yet confirmed, but the product is expected to compete with the Ray-Ban glasses at a premium, likely in the $400 to $600 range rather than the four-digit territory of the Vision Pro.

The Stakes of Getting It Right

For Apple, the N50 is not just a product — it is a proof of concept that privacy and AI-enabled wearables can coexist. The company’s competitive differentiation against Google, Meta, and Samsung in the AI era rests significantly on the argument that Apple handles data differently. A smart glasses launch that triggers a privacy backlash would damage that positioning in ways that go well beyond the glasses category.

The delay, while a commercial setback, may reflect exactly the kind of deliberateness that Apple’s brand requires. Building the right privacy architecture is slower than shipping something adequate. Whether the market will wait — and whether the architecture Apple ships will actually satisfy critics — remains to be seen.

The WWDC 2027 presentation, wherever it falls in the keynote, will carry more weight than a normal product announcement. It will be Apple’s answer to the question that has dogged the category since the first cameras arrived in eyewear: can you watch the world without the world reasonably fearing you’re watching them?
