AWS slashed GPU instance pricing by 40% last month. Google Cloud responded with 45% cuts plus free egress on AI workloads. Azure matched within 48 hours and threw in 6 months of free Cosmos DB for AI applications.

This isn’t normal cloud pricing competition. This is a land grab for the most valuable workload type in computing history: AI inference and training.

Why Now?

Three forces converging at once:

Supply catching up: The GPU shortage that defined 2024-2025 is easing. NVIDIA shipped more Blackwell GPUs in Q1 2026 than total H100s sold in all of 2024. Cloud providers finally have inventory to sell aggressively.

Inference is the new compute: Training gets the headlines, but inference — running models in production — generates the revenue. And inference workloads are growing 10x year-over-year as enterprises deploy AI applications.

Customer lock-in is the game: Cloud providers don’t make money on the GPU instance itself. They make money on the surrounding services — storage, networking, monitoring, managed databases. A customer who runs AI on Azure also runs everything else on Azure. The GPU is the loss leader.

The Committed Spend Trap

Here’s the play that should make every CTO nervous: cloud providers are offering 50-70% discounts on GPU compute in exchange for 3-5 year committed spend agreements.

The pitch sounds great: “Lock in today’s price for three years, get a massive discount.” The reality:

  • GPU costs are dropping 30-40% per year naturally as new chips ship
  • A 3-year commitment at “50% off today’s price” is actually paying more than spot price by year two
  • The commitment covers all cloud spend, not just GPU — so you’re locked into everything
  • Breaking the commitment early costs 30-50% of remaining contract value

Microsoft and Google are both offering these aggressively to enterprise customers. AWS is more cautious but still pushing Reserved Instances hard.

The Real Battlefield: Managed AI Services

Raw GPU pricing is table stakes. The real competition is on managed services that make AI easier to deploy:

  • AWS Bedrock vs Azure OpenAI Service vs Google Vertex AI — which managed model platform wins?
  • SageMaker vs Azure ML vs Vertex AI Training — which makes custom model training easiest?
  • Inferentia/Trainium (AWS) vs TPUs (Google) vs Maia (Microsoft) — custom AI chips vs NVIDIA

Google has a genuine advantage with TPUs — they’re cheaper than NVIDIA GPUs for many inference workloads. AWS’s Inferentia2 chips are solid for inference but less proven for training. Microsoft’s Maia chip is still early.

The provider that can offer competitive AI performance on their own custom silicon — without NVIDIA’s premium pricing — wins the economics game long term.

What to Watch

  • Whether the pricing war sustains through Q3 or if providers pull back once they’ve captured share
  • Custom silicon adoption rates — if TPU/Inferentia/Trainium take meaningful share from NVIDIA instances
  • The impact on pure-play GPU cloud providers (CoreWeave, Lambda Labs) who can’t match hyperscaler pricing
  • Enterprise multi-cloud strategies — are companies hedging across providers or going all-in?

The cloud pricing war isn’t about who’s cheapest today. It’s about who owns the AI workload relationship for the next decade. The price cuts are just the opening move.
