SK Hynix Posts Record Q1 2026 Earnings: 405% Profit Surge on Insatiable AI Memory Demand

The AI infrastructure boom has a clear financial beneficiary, and its name is SK Hynix. The South Korean memory chipmaker reported on April 23 the most profitable quarter in its history, posting net profit of 40.35 trillion won ($27.3 billion) for Q1 2026 — a staggering 398% increase year-over-year, and well ahead of analyst consensus.
Revenue surged 198% year-on-year to 52.58 trillion won, a figure that seemed almost implausible as recently as two years ago when the memory sector was mired in an oversupply glut. The turnaround, driven almost entirely by insatiable demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used in AI accelerators, has been one of the most dramatic earnings recoveries in semiconductor history.
The HBM Monopoly That Is Funding AI
At the center of SK Hynix’s financial transformation is HBM — a specialized memory architecture that stacks DRAM dies vertically with through-silicon vias, enabling the massive memory bandwidth that large AI models require to run efficiently. Without HBM, NVIDIA’s H100, H200, B200, and GB200 GPUs simply would not function at their rated performance.
SK Hynix holds a 57% share of the global HBM market, making it the dominant supplier in what is currently the most supply-constrained segment in all of semiconductors. Samsung and Micron trail meaningfully, with Samsung facing yield challenges on its HBM3E products and Micron only recently qualifying at scale with major customers. The supply gap between what hyperscalers and AI hardware vendors need and what the industry can produce has kept pricing firm for multiple consecutive quarters.
The company’s operating margin hit an all-time high of 72% in Q1 2026 — a figure that rivals the best software companies in the world and reflects the extraordinary pricing power that comes with being the critical chokepoint in the AI supply chain. Operating profit was 37.6 trillion won, nearly double the prior quarter.
The HBM Roadmap: HBM4E on the Horizon
Even as it banks record profits from its current HBM3E generation, SK Hynix is moving aggressively toward next-generation products. The company announced plans to begin shipping HBM4E samples in the second half of 2026, with full mass production targeted for 2027.
HBM4E improves on HBM4 (itself an upgrade from the widely deployed HBM3E) with higher data transfer rates, increased die stacking, and improved power efficiency — three dimensions that matter enormously as AI model sizes continue to grow and training runs grow more expensive. For context, HBM3E operates at 1.15 TB/s per stack; HBM4E is expected to push well past 1.5 TB/s.
Ahead of HBM4E, SK Hynix has already been shipping HBM4 to early customers, with qualification running at major hyperscalers. The product will be the memory subsystem inside NVIDIA’s next-generation Rubin GPU architecture expected to arrive in late 2026 and into 2027.
To underpin this roadmap, SK Hynix announced plans to invest 19 trillion won in a new manufacturing plant in South Korea — a signal that the company is betting HBM demand will remain structurally elevated for at least the next four to five years, not just through a cyclical peak.
Why Memory Prices Won’t Fall Anytime Soon
The traditional narrative around semiconductor cycles is that strong pricing eventually attracts enough new capacity to create oversupply and crush margins. SK Hynix’s management and most independent analysts believe HBM is structurally different for several reasons:
Conversion economics: HBM production requires repurposing standard DRAM capacity. Every HBM wafer produced is a standard DRAM wafer that isn’t. Since DRAM also remains in reasonable demand for PCs, servers, and smartphones, conversion is not unlimited — chipmakers face a genuine choice between HBM and commodity memory revenue.
Yield complexity: HBM stacking is technically demanding. Qualifying at the yield levels required by tier-1 customers like NVIDIA takes years, not months. This qualification barrier has kept the competitive field narrow.
Demand acceleration: The number of AI accelerators being deployed globally is growing faster than new HBM capacity is being added. Meta alone announced $115 billion in AI capital expenditure for 2026; Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and OpenAI are all running similarly massive infrastructure programs. The demand side of the equation is not slowing.
Geopolitics and the Supply Chain Question
SK Hynix’s earnings also carry a geopolitical dimension. The company operates a major DRAM manufacturing facility in Wuxi, China — a facility that has faced increasing scrutiny as U.S.-China technology tensions have escalated. Any forced divestiture or operational restriction on the Wuxi fab would have material implications for global HBM supply, given how tight the market already is.
The U.S. government has so far focused export restrictions primarily on advanced logic chips (GPUs, CPUs) rather than memory, but HBM’s centrality to AI infrastructure has made it an increasingly salient policy target. SK Hynix has been quietly investing in expanding its South Korean domestic capacity as a buffer — the 19 trillion won plant investment is partly a geopolitical hedge.
What the Numbers Mean for the AI Economy
