Microsoft’s annual developer conference heads to Fort Mason Center in San Francisco for the first time since 2019, convening June 2–3 with a compact, deliberately focused program built around a single overarching theme: AI agents. Microsoft Build 2026 is where the company intends to transition its developer narrative from AI experimentation to agentic production — the moment it argues that shipping autonomous software systems is no longer an advanced engineering challenge but a mainstream expectation.

In-person attendance has been deliberately shrunk to approximately 2,500 developers, down from 5,000-plus in prior years, with the stated goal of prioritizing hands-on labs and direct access to engineering teams over headline spectacle. The keynote will be livestreamed globally. In-person tickets are priced at $1,099.

The move to San Francisco — back to the heart of Silicon Valley after years of Seattle-centric programming — is itself a signal. Microsoft is competing for developer mindshare in a city that has never been its natural home, and it is doing so in the same week that a SpaceX roadshow (June 4) and Apple’s WWDC (June 8) are also vying for attention.

Agent Framework 1.0: From Preview to Production

The most immediately actionable expected announcement is the formal general availability of Microsoft’s Agent Framework for .NET and Python — the production-ready evolution of its earlier preview releases that combines Semantic Kernel foundations with AutoGen orchestration concepts and stable APIs for agent-to-agent communication.

Microsoft shipped a production-ready 1.0 release in April 2026. Build will mark the opportunity for the company to formally position this as the developer-endorsed standard for building multi-agent systems on Azure, alongside documentation, architectural guidance, and the kind of enterprise support commitments that signal “this is the thing to build on.”

The framework supports several key patterns: hierarchical agent orchestration where a planner agent coordinates specialist subagents; event-driven agent workflows that wake agents in response to data or system events rather than user prompts; and stateful agents with persistent memory that span across sessions. These patterns are the building blocks of the enterprise agentic applications that Microsoft argues represent the next $1 trillion opportunity in software.

Copilot Becomes Multi-Model and Agent-First

Perhaps the most significant architectural shift expected at Build is the formal announcement of Copilot as a multi-model, agent-first platform. According to pre-conference briefings, Microsoft is rebuilding Copilot’s orchestration layer to support not just OpenAI models — which have been the exclusive foundation since Copilot’s launch — but also Anthropic’s Claude models as alternatives within the same orchestration environment.

The decision reflects both commercial diversification and practical acknowledgment that different tasks benefit from different models. Enterprise buyers have increasingly asked for the ability to route specific workloads — code review, legal document analysis, customer service — to models optimized for those domains, rather than being locked into a single provider’s inference stack.

For developers building on Copilot Studio, this translates to new model routing APIs that allow them to specify which underlying model handles which task within an agent workflow, with Microsoft handling the multi-tenancy and compliance overhead.

GitHub Copilot, separately, is expected to receive a major session focused on fleet mode and autopilot — two features that allow the GitHub Copilot CLI to operate autonomously on codebases, executing multi-step tasks without per-step human approval. The shift toward “autopilot” represents Copilot’s evolution from a pair-programmer into a software agent capable of taking on scoped engineering tasks independently.

Azure AI Foundry: The Enterprise AI Platform

Azure AI Foundry — Microsoft’s unified platform for building, deploying, and monitoring AI applications — is expected to receive substantial updates at Build. The platform reached general availability at Build 2025 and has since become the hub through which enterprise customers access fine-tuning, evaluation, deployment pipelines, and safety tools for production AI workloads.

Expanded model catalog: Azure AI Foundry’s model marketplace has grown from around 1,600 models at GA to over 3,000 today, spanning frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta (Llama), Mistral, and specialty models from domain-specific providers. A new tier of “government-verified” models for U.S. public sector customers is expected, alongside an extension of the catalog to cover more small, locally deployable models for on-device and edge scenarios.

Agent evaluation tooling: Evaluating agentic systems is qualitatively harder than evaluating single-turn language model outputs — the failure modes are more complex, the latency budgets are longer, and the impact of errors compounds across multi-step pipelines. Foundry is expected to introduce dedicated evaluation harnesses for agentic workflows, including tracing, replay testing, and automated red-teaming for agent decision paths.

DevUI: A browser-based local debugger for inspecting agent execution and orchestration behavior in real time — visualizing which agent is active, what memory state it’s drawing on, and how it’s routing work to subagents — is expected to graduate from internal preview to developer availability.

Windows AI: On-Device and Native

The Windows track at Build 2026 reflects a longer-term bet: that the next major platform shift in personal computing involves moving AI inference from the cloud to the device. Microsoft’s Neural Processing Unit (NPU) requirements in the Copilot+ PC certification program have created a hardware installed base now numbering in the tens of millions, and Build is where the software story to unlock that hardware is expected to gain substance.

Specific announcements are expected around Windows AI APIs — native SDK surfaces that let application developers call local models without round-tripping to the cloud — and an expanded set of WinUI 3 components for building AI-native desktop applications. Microsoft’s pitch to developers: the next generation of Windows software won’t just run locally, it will think locally.

The Strategic Stakes

For Microsoft, Build 2026 arrives at a meaningful inflection point. The company’s Azure AI revenue has grown substantially since its OpenAI partnership was announced in 2023, but it now faces a more competitive landscape. AWS has expanded Bedrock’s model catalog and is aggressively marketing its agent infrastructure. Google’s Antigravity platform, announced at I/O earlier this month, positions itself as the developer-first agentic AI platform with direct Gemini integration and favorable pricing for individual developers through the new $100 AI Ultra tier.

Microsoft’s response at Build is, characteristically, to lean on its enterprise distribution advantages: the 300 million-plus Microsoft 365 users, the Azure cloud commitments, the GitHub developer relationships, and the Copilot Studio ecosystem that has already attracted tens of thousands of enterprise deployments. The pitch is not “we have the best model” — it is “we are the safest path from AI experimentation to enterprise production.”

Whether that pitch resonates will depend partly on what Microsoft actually ships at Build and partly on how the developer community responds to the agent-first framing. There is a real question in the market about whether the “agent” category has arrived at genuine production readiness or whether it remains a frontier technology requiring significant engineering patience. Build 2026 is, in part, Microsoft’s answer to that question.
