If the claim holds under independent scrutiny, it would represent the most significant shift in the open-model landscape since Meta released Llama 3 in early 2024.

The announcement comes just days after Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 open-weight release sent shockwaves through the developer community, underscoring an intensifying Chinese AI arms race that is playing out publicly, in full view of Western competitors who have largely kept their largest models locked behind APIs.

Qwen3.8 Max is Alibaba’s first multimodal model to exceed 1 trillion parameters. At launch, Qwen3.8 Max is available in preview form on Alibaba’s Token Plan subscription service, Qoder, and QoderWork — the company’s enterprise developer portal. A full open-weights release is promised, though Alibaba has not disclosed a date, a license type, or which model sizes will be included in the release.

Alibaba’s marketing materials describe Qwen3.8 Max as “one of the most powerful models available today, second only to Fable 5.” Anthropic’s Fable 5 — the internal codename for what eventually shipped as Claude’s unreleased top-tier model — has become the de facto benchmark target for every serious AI lab globally, having set the current standard on coding, reasoning, and long-horizon agentic tasks.

It is a striking claim, and it should be evaluated with appropriate skepticism. As of the announcement, Alibaba published no benchmark table, no model card, and no independent evaluation. The company’s track record with the earlier Qwen 2.5 and Qwen 3 families is strong — both outperformed contemporaneous Western open-source models on several standard benchmarks — but claiming near-parity with a closed frontier system is a different order of magnitude.

Independent researchers and developers who gained early API access reported impressive performance on code generation and multi-step reasoning tasks, but systematic head-to-head comparisons against Fable 5 have not been published. If Alibaba follows through on the open-weight release, the implications for the global AI ecosystem would be substantial.
